Delhi’s ceremonial clean-up: CM Rekha Gupta aims for cleaner markets, roads, residential areas | Today’s news

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to launch night-time cleaning drives in major markets and residential colonies, amid complaints of garbage piling up and delays in garbage collection in parts of the capital.

The order aims to improve cleanliness in Delhi when markets and public spaces usually see increased demand during the festive rush. The chief minister warned that negligence in sanitation will not be tolerated and directed civic officials to ensure that improvements are visible on the ground.

According to a statement from the Delhi Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Gupta issued the directive after presiding over a meeting attended by Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, Mayor Parvesh Vahi, Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma and MCD officials.

Why did Rekha Gupta order night cleaning in Delhi?

The decision follows complaints of piles of garbage in public spaces and delays in garbage collection in some parts of Delhi. Gupta expressed dissatisfaction with the visible results of existing cleanliness efforts, especially in large markets and shopping areas.

The Chief Minister directed the concerned departments and agencies to immediately address these deficiencies, remove garbage dumps and ensure regular cleaning.

By ordering the MCD to clean these areas at night, the government wants to ensure that the streets and public spaces remain cleaner during the day when there is more public movement.

What is the purpose of the night cleaning drive?

The proposed drive has several goals:

– Cleanliness Improvement: Ensure that the main markets, shopping areas and residential colonies are clean during the festive season.

– Address waste accumulation: Remove piles of waste and prevent delays in waste collection due to deteriorating sanitary conditions.

– Reduce disturbance during daylight hours: Clean in busy markets and residential areas at night to help maintain cleaner public spaces during the day.

– Improve Sanitation in Delhi: Expand cleaning efforts beyond leading markets to roads, intersections, flyovers, residential areas and other public places.

– Ensure visible results: Ensure that civic leaders are accountable for improvements on the ground, rather than relying only on meetings and reports.

Gupta directed the Mayor and Municipal Commissioner to speed up the cleaning work and deploy the necessary manpower. A statement from the CMO said further recruitment could be made to support night cleaning if required.

What instructions has Delhi government given to MCD?

The Chief Minister has instructed senior officials to personally inspect hygiene measures in their respective areas and address any deficiencies immediately.

She also emphasized on coordination between concerned agencies to ensure speedy resolution of complaints.

“The police officers will have to go to the ground and ensure that the given instructions are followed,” Gupta said, according to the CMO statement. She added that the deficiencies should be addressed immediately in coordination with the relevant authorities.

Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood also urged the corporation to use new technology to improve sanitation and remove piles of garbage. He warned that action would be taken against officials found negligent in the campaign.

The government has made it clear that the priority is not just to issue guidelines, but to ensure that residents and visitors see tangible improvements in cleanliness across Delhi before the festive season.

However, the CMO’s statement did not give a launch date, a detailed implementation schedule or a list of markets and residential colonies that will be covered first.
