Delhi Police has announced traffic restrictions and diversions on several key routes in central Delhi ahead of the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit at the Bharat Mandapam.
The restriction will apply on Saturday 12 September from 20:15 to 23:00 as part of security measures for the movement of heads of state and other international dignitaries.
According to the traffic plan, the area around the Bharat Mandapam will be treated as a ‘no-go area’ for general vehicular movement during the specified hours.
Key corridors across Central Delhi, New Delhi and Lutyens’ Zone, including stretches connecting Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent, Teen Murti Marg, Akbar Road, India Gate Roundabout, Mathura Road and Bhairon Marg, have been designated as “controlled roads” with limited access.
To ensure minimal disruption to public mobility, several diversion points were established along the periphery, with traffic diverted to designated alternative routes, including parts of the ring road and outer arterials.
The Delhi Police has advised commuters to plan their journeys well in advance, allow for extra time and opt for public transport, specifically the Delhi Metro, to avoid road congestion.
“In view of the BRICS Summit 2026, traffic diversions and regulated movement will be in place on key routes in Delhi on September 12 from 8:15 PM to 11:00 PM. Plan ahead, use the metro whenever possible, follow diversion routes and traffic staff instructions and allow extended travel time,” Delhi Police said on X.
The notice stated that emergency and essential services would be allowed continuous access during the restriction period.
BRICS Summit in India
India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12-13 under its BRICS Chairmanship in 2026. The country has adopted the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”, with development, sustainability and innovation identified as key areas of focus.
The BRICS grouping currently consists of 11 countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.
