
Delhi: A huge inferno engulfed Brahmaputra Apartments on Delhi’s BD Marg – residential apartments allotted to Members of Parliament (MPs). Images from the scene showed thick smoke and soot covering parts of the MP flats as firefighters battled the blaze and tried to bring it under control.
At least 14 firefighting units went to the scene, and according to news agency reports, firefighters are currently working to extinguish the fire.
Brahmaputra Apartments is a residential complex for Rajya Sabha MPs on Bishambhar Das Marg in the capital.
What is the extent of the damage?
Delhi Fire Service officials said the stilt floor of Brahmaputra Apartments sustained mostly damage, while the upper floors of the complex were hit from outside.
“As of now, the damage is mostly to the stilts and the upper floors are externally damaged. The fire has been brought under control but our work is still going on… We have no reports of casualties so far…” ADO Delhi Fire Service, Bhupender told reporters.
The Delhi Fire Service ADO also said that on receiving the report of the fire – 14 fire tenders, including a revolving ladder (TTL), were rushed to the spot – as the flat is a high-rise building.
Residents injured
A resident of Brahmaputra Apartments — who lives on the third floor of the multi-storey building — said his wife and children suffered burns. They are currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital, ANI reported.
“My dog is stuck inside. My daughter is getting married in a few months and all the jewellery, gold and clothes we bought are also inside,” ANI quoted a resident of Vinod as saying.
What caused the fire?
The exact cause of the fire is not yet known.
According to an NDTV report, eyewitnesses claimed that the fire hydrant in the apartment was not functional and there was no water in the tank and pipes.
