Delay in FIR, medical aid alleged in case of POCSO minor pregnant

The alleged delay in registering a case and providing medical treatment to a pregnant minor girl could have serious health consequences for the victim under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO), a child rights organization has said.

According to the organizations, on June 26, 2026, the girl’s family filed a complaint against child marriage and offenses under the POCSO Act at the Nuzvid Rural police station.

The Nuzvid rural police registered a Zero FIR and sent the girl to an open shelter for girls at Nuzvid in Eluru district the next day.

The management of the Open Shelter produced the girl before the Krishna District Child Welfare Committee (CWC) on June 29. On the same day, the committee shifted the 14-year-old girl, who was four months pregnant, to a Child Welfare Institution (CCI) in NTR district.

“We alerted the Vissannapet police on June 29 after a 14-year-old pregnant girl was referred to the CCI in a POCSO case. We directed them to register a fresh FIR and follow the prescribed legal and medical procedures,” CWC member Chandragiri Radha Kumari said.

The Vissannapet police under Commissioner NTR registered the case again on July 7. The girl was admitted to the hospital on July 24.

“We tried to provide medical help to the girl on June 29, but the doctors insisted on an FIR as it was a POCSO case. We took the same to the NTR police, who registered the case only on July 7,” District CWC Chairman Krishna K. Suvartha said.

Doctors said there was a need to regularly monitor fetal growth, hemoglobin levels, blood pressure and other vital parameters to minimize health risks as the girl was a minor.

“The victim should be counseled early on the legal and medical aspects, the risks involved and the medical care required,” said advocate and child rights activist Radha Chandrika.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Mylavaram P. Ramachandra Rao, who is investigating the case, was contacted and said that possible reasons for the delay in registering the case and providing medical treatment would be looked into.

“We have arrested the main accused and efforts are underway to nab the remaining accused,” ACP said.
