CWG silver medalist Tulika Maan has pulled out of the Glasgow Games after being suspended

India’s Commonwealth Games silver medalist Tulika Maan has been withdrawn from the ongoing Glasgow Commonwealth Games after being suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for three whereabouts errors in a 12-month period. The setback leaves the veteran judoka facing a possible two-year ban under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules.

Maan, who won silver in the women’s over 78kg category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, was among India’s top medal hopes in Glasgow before suspension forced her out of the team.

A member of the Indian judo contingent confirmed that Maan was removed from the team after receiving a notice from NADA for repeated whereabouts errors.

“She has committed three stay errors in 12 months and NADA has sent her a notice. So she will be dropped from the team,” the judo coach told PTI on condition of anonymity.

The 27-year-old became the second Indian judoka to be banned from the Games in as many days after Arun Kumar was provisionally suspended for a positive out-of-competition drug test.

SECOND JUDO STRIKE FOR INDIA

Maan’s withdrawal is another big setback for India’s judo campaign in Glasgow. Just a day earlier, the men’s judoka up to 73 kg Arun Kumar has been removed from the team after testing positive for an anabolic steroid during an out-of-competition test conducted by NADA.

The Indian judo contingent is yet to go to Glasgow, with the team’s events starting on July 31. The team is scheduled to leave on July 27, but two suspensions have already disrupted India’s preparations ahead of the competition.

WHAT THE WHEREABOUTS RULE MEANS

Unlike the positive doping test, Maan’s case involves the residency anti-doping system. Under WADA regulations, three failed submissions, missed tests, or a combination of both within a 12-month period constitute an anti-doping rule violation.

Athletes in the Registered Testing Pool are required to regularly update their location information, including training locations, accommodation and the daily 60-minute time slot during which they must be available for out-of-competition testing. Failure to comply with these obligations may result in disciplinary action, including suspension.

MAJOR BLOW TO INDIA’S MEDAL HOPES

Maan has been among the most successful Indian judokas in recent years. Apart from winning silver from the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, she represented India at the 2024 Paris Olympics and also competed at the 2022 and 2024 World Championships.

India has named a 14-member judo team for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games after winning three medals in Birmingham 2022. Maan’s absence significantly weakens India’s chances in the women’s heavyweight category and raises further concerns after two members of the contingent were withdrawn before the competition even began.
