Two crane operators were injured after a crane caught fire during cargo unloading operations at the BPS Port in Mumbai on Sunday evening, the Mumbai Police said.
According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on August 30 and involved the Barbadian-flagged vessel “Vienna”.
“At around 19:30 on 30 August 2026, the Barbadian-flagged vessel ‘Vienna’ was undergoing cargo discharge operations at the BPS Port of Mumbai Port. The cargo weighing 140 tonnes was lifted from the vessel with the assistance of two cranes operated by Barbakat.ANI,” police told Mumbakat.ANI.
A purported video circulating on social media showed a crane on fire during a cargo lifting operation at the Mumbai port on Sunday evening. Mint could not verify the authenticity of the video.
What led to the fire?
Police said the incident occurred after a technical fault while lifting a heavy load resulted in one of the cranes catching fire.
“During the incident, a sling attached to the load on one of the cranes became unbalanced and came loose, causing the entire load to shift onto the other crane. The second crane was subsequently lifted off the ground and its front telescopic boom struck the vessel. Due to the friction caused during the incident, the crane caught fire,” Mumbai Police added.
After the incident, the Mumbai Port Fire Brigade was immediately alerted and dispatched to the spot. Firefighters managed to get the fire under control and put it out.
Two wounded, probe launched
The incident left two employees of Barkat Company injured. “Crane operator Ranjit Singh and another operator Nishant Singh of Barkat Company were injured in the incident. They were taken to St. George Hospital for medical treatment,” police said.
Police said an investigation has been launched to establish the exact circumstances that led to the accident and subsequent fire. “Investigation into the incident is currently underway,” the Mumbai Police added.
