
The state government took the corporal punishment meted out to the student by the principal and teachers of the St. Mary’s in Sunkadakatte, Bengaluru, seriously and directed the Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) to submit a detailed report.
Officer on Special Duty to Chief Minister K. Vaishnavi has written a letter to DSEL Principal Secretary asking them to investigate the facts of the case, take necessary action and submit a match report with the Global Positioning System (GPS) photographs.
Meanwhile, the Block Education Officer (BEO) of Bengaluru North Zone-1 visited the school, examined the teachers, students and school management and reported to the Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI).
The report states that it is clear that the principal and teachers inflicted corporal punishment on the student and more facts must emerge from the investigation.
Additionally, regarding the school’s security measures, it was found that the institution does not have a grill on every floor. “There is no toilet system according to the number of children. The school does not have a fire safety certificate and building safety standards. CCTV systems have been installed in the school. However, the storage of CCTV footage has not been acquired for the last month,” the report said.
Student of the 5th grade of the state school St. Mary’s Public School was allegedly assaulted by the principal and teachers with a PVC pipe and locked in a room for absenteeism for two days. The alleged incident occurred on October 14. Based on a complaint by the student’s parents, an FIR was registered at the Kamakshipalya police station against the principal and two teachers.
The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) has also registered a suo motu case.
