Congress on Saturday (May 31, 2025) in Jabalpur Madhya Pradesh focused on the government of the Union Bharatiya Janata (BJP) and claimed that the armed forces were not one party but the whole nation. The comments came the day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the capital of Bhopal.
Several leading congress, including former main ministers Digvijaya Singh, Kamal Nath and Chhattisgarh’s Bhupesh Baghel, dealt with the assembly at the “Jai Hind Sabha” assembly. This event was part of the party’s national campaign in honor of the armed forces and staff for their service during the Sindoor operation, the Indian reaction to the terrorist attack of Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists.
The address of the audience, Mr. Baghel, the National Secretary of the Party, said, “The army is not one of the nations. There is no doubt about their courage. The question is the transparency of government intentions and decisions.”
“What is the urge that those who have shown their 56 -inch chest are now working under the pressure of the US President (US) Trump?” Mr. Baghel asked in apparent criticism of the Prime Minister and referred to the perceived role of Mr. Trump in the notice of the ceasefire between India and Pakistan 10 May.
Mr. Baghel said that Congress fully supported the government after the attack of Pahalgam: “But the Prime Minister did not participate in any of the two meetings of all parties.”
“He didn’t go to Pahalgam, but to Bihar for an election campaign,” he added.
Mr. Singh, currently a member of Rajya Sabha, gave a sharp criticism of BJP for recent comments by representatives of the main Minister Madhya Pradesh Jagdish Devda, who allegedly stated that the armed forces “bowed to Mr. Modi”.
“They insult the armed forces and say (they) are in the feet of Narendry modi. That’s their thinking,” Mr. Singh said, claiming that Congress supports an ideology that adhered to respect for forces.
“We will only be safe if we remain united. BJP performs the policy of spreading hatred. Those who make politics on martyrdom can not be patriots,” he added.
It reminded the 1971 Indo-Pak War and Mr. Nath said that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi did not have American pressure.
“I saw the 1971 war. America caused different types of pressure, but she wasn’t bending,” he said.
Mr. Nath, who led the last government of Congress in the state, also criticized the current administration and described that Madhya Pradesh became “the capital of lies, corruption, crimes against women and farming politicians”.
Congress President Madhya Pradesh Jitu Patwari noted that the whole country was behind the government when the prime minister demanded support.
“But the Prime Minister betrayed Pok (Pakistan-Kashmir). If Indira Gandhi was a prime minister today, Pok would be part of India. The whole country asks why the Prime Minister bowed to Trump?” Mr. Patwari said.
Other leaders present at the event included the State leader of the opposition Umang Singhar, the State Congress, authorized by Harish Choudhary and Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha.
Mr. Singhar claimed that the ceasefire agreement was a “trick” between Mr. Modi and the United States.
“Modi is referred to in the name Sindoor Yatra,” he said.
