Collector A. Shyam Prasad on Saturday called for joint efforts by the Transport, Police, Education and Roads and Buildings Departments to improve road safety and reduce accidents in Sri Sathy Sai district. Addressing a meeting of the district-level Road Safety Coordination Committee here, he urged officials to strive for zero fatalities by enforcing road safety rules and identifying accident-prone areas.
From January to September of this year, there were 429 traffic accidents in the district, in which 255 were killed and 483 were injured. Of these, there were 233 fatal and 196 non-fatal cases. “Highest priority should be to place signboards and rumble strips at black spots, install blinkers and flashing lights whenever necessary. Improvement of lighting along national highways is essential to prevent accidents,” he said, insisting on regular clearance of jungles on curves and maintenance of truck stops, especially at Palasamudram Cross to prevent collision.
The Collector directed managements of all private educational institutions to install reverse cameras in their vehicles transporting students. All school and college buses should obtain certificates from the relevant authorities. Mr. Shyam Prasad further directed the officials to strictly implement measures against helmetless riders and motorists using mobile phones while driving.
Meanwhile, SP S. Satish Kumar warned that drink-driving offenders would face severe legal consequences, apart from cancellation of their driving licences. He emphasized the effectiveness of billboards, rumble strips and the use of speed guns to curb reckless driving and speeding.
