In a bid to strengthen the administrative machinery, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Saturday (June 13) directed Deputy Commissioners, Director Generals, Superintendents of Police and other senior officials to remain posted at the district headquarters and be present in their offices till 10 am to address public grievances and ensure effective implementation of welfare and development programmes.

Along with his cabinet colleagues, the chief minister met senior civil servants at the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru in less than a week.

He has directed district level officials to visit each taluk and convene meetings with block level officials to ensure proper voter enumeration during the ongoing special intensive revision of voter rolls.

Public access

District officials have also been asked to display their office addresses and phone numbers prominently on government websites to facilitate public access. Mr. Shivakumar said the secretariat level officials would maintain regular contact with the district administrations and communicate priority programs and guidelines.

“Officials must respond positively and quickly to the problems facing the public,” he said.

The Chief Minister also told police officers to form squads to round up miscreants/anti-social elements in each district to ensure law and order.

Monsoon preparedness

Amid monsoon rains lashing several parts of the state, the chief minister reviewed the availability of key agricultural inputs, including fertilizers, seeds and pesticides, and directed officials to ensure adequate supplies.

He also directed the authorities to complete the distribution of textbooks, school bags, uniforms and shoes to the students within the next month.

Referring to schools with very low enrollment, Mr. Shivakumar said the government would explore using corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds to construct school buildings in gram-panchayat areas rather than urban centers.

“I communicated how the new government should work. We must ensure transparent administration and eliminate corruption,” he said.

Bypasses in cities

To address the growing traffic congestion in smaller cities, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that every urban center should have a ring road and directed officials to prepare plans accordingly.

‘PM said I am doing a good job’

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar responded to Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy’s warning that he would launch a legal battle against the Bidadi Township project, saying, “I wish Kumaraswamy all the best. When I met the Prime Minister, he told me that he had also developed seven or eight townships and that I was doing a good job of reducing the pressure on Bengaluru. He gave me this advice knowingly.”
