Chaos erupted in Delhi on Saturday after Delhi Police removed climate activist Sonam Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar as his indefinite hunger strike was set to enter its 21st day. After his removal, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke said the movement would not end.
Addressing supporters of the movement, Dipke said, “If they think that taking Sonam Sir away will end this movement, they are wrong. We will stay here and march to Parliament on July 20.” He added, “Till now we have demanded Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, but after this heinous act we will now demand Narendra Modi’s resignation.”
He further announced, “I am starting my indefinite hunger strike from today. I appeal to all: do not back down; this movement will only grow bigger. They have made a grave mistake… I am calling on everyone to come to Jantar Mantar; our movement will continue from there and we will continue our march scheduled for July 20.”

The development comes nearly a month after the CJP started protesting against Jantar Mantar and sought the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the NEET paper leak. On 28 June, Wangchuk joined the CJP protest, after which he went on hunger strike.
Sonam Wangchuk taken to hospital
Delhi Police on Saturday took Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar and admitted him to Safdarjung Hospital in the capital, citing the Delhi High Court’s order and his deteriorating health. DCP Sachin Sharma told ANI, “In accordance with the order of the Hon’ble High Court and in view of his medical condition and expert medical advice, Mr. Sonam Wangchuk was taken from here to a government hospital for treatment; there was no charge of lathi charge or anything like that.”
After his forced hospitalization, Wangchuk’s wife released a statement saying, “I am at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, where Wangchuk was admitted. Nothing should be given to him orally or intravenously without the consent of me, his family and his doctors who have been monitoring his health for the past 20 days.”

Sonam Wangchuk Health Update
On Saturday, Safdarjung Hospital issued a statement saying Wangchuk was admitted to the hospital for required medical treatment. The statement added that he was weak due to prolonged fasting and dehydration.
On Friday, doctors treating the climate activist said: “It is the 20th day of the hunger strike. As of 9:30 a.m. July 17, 2026, the key health parameters are as follows. The person’s weight is 56.55 kg, a decrease of 350 grams in the last 24 hours. Blood pressure 6 l8, pulse rate is 108 mg/ 72 per minute, with mild dehydration observed… As explained earlier when the body does not receive glucose, protein or carbohydrates, there are changes in the initial phase, followed by the loss of muscle mass and the formation of ketone bodies in the urine.
The PTI news agency quoted Friday’s health bulletin as saying Wangchuk weighed 56.55 kg, while his blood pressure was recorded at 108/68 mm Hg, blood sugar at 80 mg/dL, heart rate at 72 beats per minute and oxygen saturation at 96 percent. Doctors added that although he showed signs of mild dehydration, he remained mentally alert.

Wangchuk refuses to call off the strike
Wangchuk refused to call off the strike on Friday, saying ending the indefinite hunger strike without receiving a response would send the wrong message. He also called for massive support for the planned march to parliament on 20 July. He told his supporters: “I am weak on the outside but very strong on the inside. I am sure you all are strong on the inside and outside. We need this energy for July 20 when we will march peacefully to Parliament. We will go together and make our plea at the temple of democracy.”
