Delhi witnessed an unprecedented crackdown on protesters demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Saturday, with over 7,000 people detained, closure of 45 metro stations, railway stations and the arrest of Cockroach Janta Party activists Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and others as they landed right in the national capital.

Jantar Mantar, where the protest was supposed to take place, had a deserted look throughout the day with 30,000 policemen deployed.

The Delhi Police detained a number of prominent opposition leaders, including four former chief ministers – Pinarayi Vijayan, Manik Sarkar, Arvind Kejriwal and Mamata Banerjee.

CJP calls for fresh protests

The CJP held a press conference in the evening where he announced that he was launching a fresh protest on Sunday demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over his alleged irregularities in the electoral rolls.

This was announced by CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde. “There will be daily marches to Jantar Mantar from now till Gyanesh Kumar is sacked as CEC,” Shinde said during a press conference.

SFI General Secretary Srijan Bhattacharyya said that the students would hold peaceful demonstrations and that the places where they were stopped by police barricades would become their protest sites.

Traffic curbs on Sunday in Delhi

With the CJP announcing a fresh protest tomorrow, traffic curbs have been announced at 30 key locations in Delhi.

According to an advisory issued by the Delhi Traffic Police late on Saturday, detours will be in place from 6:00 am on Sunday depending on the prevailing situation and traffic movement may be affected around Jantar Mantar, Connaught Place, Mandi House, Patel Chowk and several other intersections in central Delhi.

The affected sections include Ashoka Road-Jantar Mantar Road roundabout, Tolstoy Marg-Janpath junction, Jai Singh Road-Sansad Marg junction, Rail Bhawan roundabout, Patel Chowk, Gol Dak Khana and several junctions around Connaught Place.

Traffic may also be affected at Mandi House, Minto Road-Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg junction, Lodhi Road flyover, Neela Gumbad roundabout, Samrat Hotel roundabout, Sardar Patel Marg-Panchsheel Marg crossing and underpasses under Bhikaji Cama Place and Moti Bagh flyovers.

Commuters have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and allow extra time while traveling to railway stations, inter-state bus terminals and airports via New Delhi and Central Delhi.

The traffic police said restrictions will be regulated or relaxed based on real-time assessment of the situation and urged commuters to follow updates through its official website and social media platforms.
