On Monday, street sellers of Church Street organized a silent protest on the street against alleged harassment, which they face from Bruhat Bengalur Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) and the city police Bengaluru. Demonstrators later submitted a memorandum to the common Commissioner of BBMP, East Zone with their requirements.
“The rich can park their car on Church Street, but the poor street sellers are selected with a 500 GBP penalty. It is a violation of the street sellers (protection of livelihoods and street sales) of the Act of 2014,” the protesters said. They added: “BBMP provided us with cards of cards and also provided loans for street sellers.
Memorandum presented by Karnataka Pragathipara Beedi Vyaparigala Sangha said that from 15 to 20 years there are 53 authorized street sellers, many of whom are women of poor families, selling items such as clothing, fruit, plastic items, earrings, earrings, etc.
Sellers also demanded that a formal order be issued to avoid harassment of all registered Church Street retailers and all unregistered retailers should also be included in the next BBMP survey and provide sales certificates. They also stated that urban sales (TVC) meetings should take place before deciding on them.
The protesters were taken into a preventive custody when they went to the BBMP and were released after three hours.
