ADILABAD
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Thursday promised to put Adilabad on the aviation map, saying that work on the proposed airport in the district headquarters town would begin within a year.
Airbus will land in Adilabad, once considered the most backward district, where even buses hardly passed, and the air link will boost economic growth and tourism in the region, he said at a public meeting christened ‘Praja Palana – Praja Vijayotsava Sabha’ in Adilabad on Thursday.
“As we approached, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu have agreed to work together to set up an airport in Adilabad if the state government allocates land. In collaboration with the Centre, our government will see to it that the airport becomes operational within a year,” he said.
Mr. Reddy drew huge applause from the audience when he apparently referred to the state government’s initiative to acquire 700 acres of land for the development of a joint user airport in Adilabad, where the old IAF airstrip is located. The air connectivity will boost economic growth in the region and also make travel hassle-free for tourists from across the country to ecotourism spots, including a tiger reserve in the forests between Telangana and Maharashtra, he noted.
Mr Reddy trained his guns on the previous BRS rulers, alleging that they had arbitrarily changed the location of the main fire planned under the Pranahita-Chevella project from Tummidihatti in Adilabad district to Medigadda under the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP). They (BRS rulers) changed the name of the project started by the then YS Rajasekhara Reddy government in united Andhra Pradesh and built KLIP at an increased cost of a whopping ₹ 1 lakh crore. But the project collapsed within three years of its construction, leading to a colossal waste of public money. According to him, the previous BRS rulers had deprived the farmers of undivided Adilabad district of assured water for irrigation.
Mr. Reddy said the government would start the Pranahita-Chevella project by constructing a barrage at Tummidihatti to provide irrigation facilities to the entire undivided Adilabad district. “We have already started the process for the fast-track start of the project,” he said, urging Adilabad MP G Nagesh and BJP MLA Payal Shanker to prevail on the BJP-led governments at the Center and Maharashtra to ensure speedy execution of the project.
Referring to the defunct unit of Cement Corporation of India (CCI) in Adilabad, he said, “We will try to ensure the establishment of a cement plant in Adilabad to provide employment opportunities to the local youth. I have invited Soniyamma (Sonia Gandhi) and others to the Telangana Rising Global Summit on December 8 and 9. The Rajyam (Congress government) is committed to all-round development of the state to realize the goals for which Telangana came into being in 2014.”
