Chennai has reported 4,600 cases of fever so far in September: Corporation

The number of fever cases reported in Chennai has increased from 4,400 in August to 4,600 so far in September, according to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).

Addressing a press meet on Sunday, GCC Commissioner GS Sameeran said around 95% of dengue cases were self-healing and managed at home, while about 5% required hospitalisation.

An analysis of fever trends over the past two months showed higher numbers in institutional areas including IIT-Madras, Anna University, Presidency College, Victoria Hostel and Madras University, where a large number of students stay.

At the Victoria hostel, students reported problems with cleaning, hygiene, food preparation and infrastructure. The GCC has asked the college authorities and the university registrar to address the issues raised and offer assistance.

About 100 students volunteered to join the dengue prevention work with GCC field workers, Mr. Sameeran said. The company has deployed 3,690 domestic breeders to cover 80 to 100 houses daily, followed by clean-up operations in identified hotspots.

378 people were examined at Anna University Medical Camp on Sunday. Of those, seven had fever, 44 had upper respiratory infections, six had myalgia, three had skin rashes and three had conjunctivitis, the news release said.

The GCC has collected fines of ₹ 5.56 lakh in the last 20 days for standing water violations, mainly from commercial institutions. Mr. Sameeran said the corporation was conducting around 100 health camps every day, of which more than 4,000 people had benefited in the last 20 days.
