A day after a five-storey building collapsed in southwest Delhi’s Satya Niketan, killing at least six people, fresh CCTV footage captured the moment the structure suddenly collapsed, with a shopkeeper narrowly escaping moments before the collapse.

At least 12 people have been rescued so far as the rescue and search operation continues for the second day, Monday, news agency PTI reported.

The building that collapsed on September 6 was a five-story boys’ dormitory for paying guests called “Hostel Daze.” The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. while repairs were underway.

After the incident, several agencies including Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) carried out rescue operations during the night.

Here are the main updates on the Delhi building collapse case:

1. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi issued a statement that 11 patients were admitted to the JPN Apex Trauma Centre. The statement read: “Of the 11 patients, five were dead, while one patient, who was in critical condition, later succumbed to his injuries; three patients were admitted and are being treated. One patient underwent surgery on a limb. One patient suffered minor injuries and was discharged after observation.”

2. Following the incident, the Delhi government issued directives to immediately shut down illegal five-storey buildings across the city. The move is part of a wider security crackdown, according to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s office. The civic body has also promised to take strict action against officials who are responsible for approving such structures. In a post on X, Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi wrote, “The culprits of the Satya Niketan building incident in Delhi will not be spared under any circumstances.” Wahi added, “All illegal structures with more than four floors will be sealed immediately and strict action will be taken against the erring officials leading to their immediate dismissal.”

3. Rekha Gupta revisited the crash site on Monday to review security arrangements and ongoing search operations. According to the CMO, an FIR has also been registered against the owner of the building. The government has also directed authorities to conduct detailed inspections of nearby Paying Guest (PG) accommodation and other buildings where the properties were found to be violating norms to be sealed. The CM said that the safety of the people of Delhi would not be compromised and warned that those responsible for the negligence would be held accountable. The administration also placed iron jacks to provide support to buildings located near the collapse site.

4. Commenting on the building collapse, Gupta said: “Approximately 80% of the debris has been cleared; only the rubble from the basement remains. It is certain that there was water in the basement and the accumulation of water – combined with ongoing repairs to the old structure – caused the building to collapse. 12 people have been rescued so far, six others are in stable condition.”

5. Following the incident, the Delhi Traffic Police also issued an advisory stating that traffic movement has been affected on several routes as rescue operations are on at the spot. In a post on X, the traffic police wrote: “TRAFFIC ALERT | SATYA NIKETAN Rescue and relief operations are underway after a building collapsed at Satya Niketan Market, South Campus. Rescue teams are at the scene. Movement is affected on the routes from Safdarjung Hospital towards Dhaula Kuan, RTR and Benito Juarez THE Alternative Route, AVOID STR. and follow the instructions of traffic personnel, do not stop, park or fight near the accident site. Your cooperation can help save lives.

The incident also raised concerns about the safety of buildings used as accommodation for paying guests and the enforcement of building and fire standards in densely populated areas of the state capital.
