The Kerala chapter of the Cardiology Society of India (CSI) has condemned the spread of false and misleading media reports that wrongly linked Arif Mohammed, a cardiologist from Kozhikode, to the recent Delhi bomb blast.
In a statement Monday (Nov. 17), CSI officials said several media outlets and social media outlets misused the photo and identity of Dr. Arifa, causing serious suffering to him and those around him. Dr. Arif, who is currently working in a private hospital in Kozhikode, completed his DM in Cardiology from Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram in 2021 and has no connection with the Delhi incident, they said.
PK Asokan, president, CSI Kerala branch, said the careless publication of incorrect information had caused “immense mental trauma to the innocent doctor, his family and the medical community”. “An innocent professional was dragged into a situation he had nothing to do with. The reckless dissemination of his photos and personal data is unacceptable,” said Dr. Asokan. He called on the authorities to act swiftly to stop the spread of this misinformation and take strict action against those responsible for it. Dr. Asokan and Jo Joseph, secretary, CSI Kerala branch, appealed to the media to withdraw the erroneous reports, issue clarifications whenever necessary and maintain restraint in future reports.
