Bureau of Police Research and Development, National Crime Records Bureau get new bosses

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Monday (July 6, 2026) appointed 1993 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officers Alok Mittal and Amit Garg as the chiefs of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) and the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

Both the BPR&D and the NCRB, which come under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, have played a key role in implementing the country’s new criminal laws and are responsible for modernizing the police force and major policy reforms.

Sujeet Pandey, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA).

Mr. Mittal, who is currently the Director General of Prisons, Haryana, previously served in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and worked extensively on cases involving the Islamic State. Under his watch, several IS modules were destroyed by the NIA in 2017-2020.

The ACC order stated that he will serve as Director General, BPR&D from the date of his assumption of office till June 30, 2029, the date of his retirement, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Garg is currently working as the Director of SVPNPA. He has been appointed to head the NCRB on temporary promotion to the post of Director General from the date of his assumption of office till the date of his retirement (October 31, 2027) or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
