Communist Party of India (Marxist) supremo and founder member of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) Brinda Karat on Sunday urged women’s organizations to step up their fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party-Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh combine, which she termed as the biggest threat to the country, especially to women.
Addressing a public meeting at the Bus Bhavan Grounds here, Ms. Karat criticized the Union Government for the Viksit Bharat Mission – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika (Gramin) or the VB-G RAM G Act and called for a sustained nationwide movement for the revival of the Mahatma Gandhi-specific Rural State Security Act and its emphasis on the role of rural poor women (MGNREGA), stressing.cro
Accusing the BJP and the RSS of never accepting the Constitution of India, Ms Karat claimed that their ideological aim was to enforce the Manusmriti, which she said institutionalized discrimination against women. Referring to the 77th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, she noted that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi saluted the national flag at India Gate, his salute was not to the Constitution but to the ideology of the RSS.
Ms. Karat also emphasized the need to continue resisting the “imperialist, capitalist and manuvada forces” that perpetuate injustice and discrimination against women. Citing cases of communal sexual violence, she expressed particular concern over attacks on Muslim, Christian, Dalit and Adivasi women. She praised the Kerala government for its pro-women initiatives and welfare measures, calling the state a role model for women empowerment.
AIDWA National President PK Sreemathi called on AIDWA activists to remember Malla Swarajyam, which united people against the tyranny of the Nizams and waged revolutionary struggles, and to draw fresh inspiration from it. She announced that they will discuss issues and challenges faced by women in the country along with other social issues. AIDWA National Conference Committee Chairperson Shanta Sinha, noted actress M. Rohini, AIDWA General Secretary Mariam Dhawale and others addressed the inaugural session. The four-day conference was attended by around 850 delegates and observers from 26 countries.
