BRICS Summit: The Delhi Police has put in place an extensive security and traffic management plan ahead of the BRICS summit this weekend. More than 15,000 personnel and around 200 companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) were mobilized for law and order maintenance and other operational tasks.

With more than 100 National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, anti-drone systems and repeated mock drills, security arrangements for the summit of high-level leaders are being kept completely secure.

The measures developed by the Delhi Police’s security unit in coordination with national and international security agencies are on a scale comparable to those put in place for the G20 summit held in 2023, according to officials.

The Delhi Police is mobilizing more than 15,000 personnel, deploying around 200 companies of CAPFs and deploying more than 100 NSG commandos along with anti-drone systems and conducting mock exercises.

Extensive traffic restrictions and detours will be in place during the BRICS summit, particularly around designated routes for dignitaries, to ensure smooth movement and security.

The airspace restrictions are in place to ensure the safety of the dignitaries involved and affect flights within a 300 km radius of Delhi from September 11 to 13, with specific categories allowed to operate.

Passengers should check their airline’s flight status, allow extra time to travel to the airport, and keep up-to-date with Delhi Traffic Police and airport alerts to avoid delays.

Among the major officials who attended are Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, Cyril Ramaphosa, Masoud Pezeshkian and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi representing various BRICS member and partner countries.

The high-profile summit, which is scheduled at the Bharat Mandapam, will bring together leaders of BRICS member and partner countries as well as invitees.

Special Commissioner of Police (Security) Manish Agarwal said around 16 heads of state are expected to attend the summit, including several leaders requiring high levels of security.

Agarwal told news agency ANI that the Delhi Police has coordinated extensively with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Intelligence Bureau (IB) and other agencies to ensure comprehensive security arrangements for the talks and events related to the summit.

“Delhi Police has internally mobilized more than 15,000 personnel for these measures. MHA has provided us with around 200 companies of CAPFs who are being deployed for statutory duties and other operational tasks,” he said.

Agarwal further said that the designated routes have been disinfected and will be closely monitored by the Delhi Police and its traffic department to prevent any security threat and ensure smooth movement of traffic.

“We have disinfected the designated routes; Delhi Police and the traffic department will monitor them to guard against sabotage and ensure smooth operations,” he added.

In light of the movement of dignitaries, the Department of Transportation also issued an advisory asking the public to avoid routes that could face restrictions or disruptions during the summit.

Police have released details of the dates and timing of anticipated traffic restrictions to facilitate public movement and minimize inconvenience during the heavily guarded event.

India’s Chairmanship of the 18th BRICS Summit

India’s chairmanship of the 18th BRICS Summit is guided by the theme of ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’, adopting a people-centric approach across its core pillars to strengthen institutional strength and promote sustainable growth.

The summit will mark the culmination of India’s BRICS chairmanship, with New Delhi looking to deepen cooperation in trade, digital technology, finance, energy security and global governance reform.

The September 12-13 summit is expected to focus on strengthening cooperation between member countries and advancing a broad development and economic agenda.

The expanded 11-member BRICS grouping includes Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia became a full member in 2025.

The wider BRICS framework also includes 10 partner countries – Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam – which participate as partner countries while remaining distinct from full members.

Safety at a glance

According to a report in the Indian Express, as many as 30 officers of the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) have been deployed from the main venue, the Bharat Mandapam, and hotels across the city where the dignitaries will be staying.
