Bengaluru’s Church Street, which will host weekly busking sessions for independent musicians

Church Street witnessed a different kind of Friday night as live music filled the popular stretch with independent musicians performing in the public space as part of a new busking initiative launched by Bengaluru-based platform The Music Scene.

Organized by Unboxing BLR, the program was inaugurated at Church Street and featured performances by Carnatic singer Ashwin Kurian with guitarist Debjit Sarkar, Tulu singer-songwriter Praveen Alva of Alva Kuuto, Bengaluru singer Loysum and singer-songwriter Meghana Achar, who performs under the stage name Mangopickl.

Hari Menon, co-founder of BigBasket and main patron of The Music Scene, said the initiative was seen as an integral part of the Church Street experience rather than a conventional concert. “People can meet up with friends, see a show, continue to explore Church Street and come back to enjoy another artist,” he said.

Unlike ticketed concerts, the performances were held amid the normal bustle of the street, with shoppers, families and visitors stopping to listen before continuing on with the evening, while others stayed for a few shows.

Following the inaugural edition, The Music Scene will host busking on Church Street every Saturday.
