Chief of the Defense Staff General Anil Chauhan on Friday (Nov 14, 2025) urged Indian defense manufacturers to combine patriotism with profit, stressing that delays, over-promising and inflated costs undermine national security.
Speaking at a seminar at the United Service Institution (USI), he said the armed forces expected “a bit of nationalism and patriotism” in industry’s efforts, especially when critical capabilities depend on timely delivery.
General Chauhan cautioned against exaggerated claims about indigenization and said companies must present an honest assessment of their capabilities. “You can’t leave us hanging. If you sign a contract and don’t deliver on time, that’s a loss of ability,” he said, pointing to cases where companies “overpromised and underdelivered.”
“No Finalists in War”
He also emphasized on cost competitiveness, not only for domestic procurement but also to ensure that Indian defense products can succeed globally.
Considering the changing nature of warfare, the CDS said that uncertainty defines conflict and therefore preparation, foresight and accurate equipment are essential. “There are no finalists in war,” he said.
Gene. Chauhan also reflected on how the very basis of military strategy evolved. Before, he said, strategy was largely dictated by geography; in ancient and medieval warfare, it was the commanders who controlled the terrain who ultimately shaped the course of battles.
