Be fair to GT: Sunil Gavaskar says IPL final should have been postponed due to road chaos

Sunil Gavaskar said the IPL 2026 final should have been moved to a reserve day on Monday, June 1, after Gujarat Titans arrived in Ahmedabad following a travel delay. The GT flight from Mullanpur to Ahmedabad was delayed due to adverse weather conditions.

Shubman Gill and Co. they were due to reach Ahmedabad in the early afternoonbut remained trapped due to weather conditions. GT landed in Ahmedabad late on Saturday around 10.45pm and reached their team hotel around midnight. RCB, on the other hand, have been in town ever since they beat Gujarat in Qualifier 1 on Tuesday, May 26.

This meant that the defending champions got more rest in their tank as GT had to face RR in Qualifier 2 and start a thrilling chase. Speaking exclusively to India Today, Gavaskar said that delaying the trip would seriously disrupt Gujarat’s preparations for the finals.

The Indian legend said that with a reserve day, the BCCI should have been fair to GT and postponed the game to Monday.

“Yes, sure. Make no mistake, players require rest. You didn’t know when your flight was leaving, so you were nervous. Which means that apart from the physical losses, you’re also mentally.”

“So I thought with the reserve day, given that what happened was completely unexpected, I thought they could have moved the final to tomorrow, just to be a bit fair to the Gujarat Titans team,” he said.

GT BEAT RCB IN AHMEDABAD THIS SEASON

Gujarat will be buoyed by the fact that they have already beaten RCB in Ahmedabad this season. GT won the match by four wickets after a disciplined bowling performance helped restrict the defending champions to 155.
