BCCI requests Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s parents to travel with Team India for overseas tours
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has asked Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s parents to travel with the 15-year-old for India’s tours to Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. The board’s request comes just after the national selectors called up Vaibhav in the T20I squad.
The BCCI has made special arrangements for young Vaibhav, who is assimilating into the senior team for the first time in his career. The youngster could become India’s youngest ever debutant, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record of debuting at the age of 16 years and 207 days.
India T20 Team Selection: Full Details
Speaking to Hindustan Times, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said that while the board does not usually allow parents to accompany players on tours, special permission has been granted to Vaibhav and his family as India looks to bring in special talent to the national team.
“He has been selected to go with the senior team from the India A team to Sri Lanka. Being a young child, he is still a minor. When he is traveling with the men’s team, who are all adults, therefore we feel it is right that his parents or anyone in the family can travel with him to Sri Lanka,” Saikia said.
“We will send a request to his parents. If they are willing to go, then they can go. In fact, his father is traveling to Sri Lanka tomorrow. That is our idea. And then if his parents also wish to go to England, the BCCI will support it because he is a kid. So he would need some time to assimilate with the older boys. So from that point of view, it is not that we are all helping but we are not all helping. When he is 15, he should feel comfortably and it should take him some time to get used to the grown-up world,” the BCCI secretary added.
AGARKAR SHOWS FAITH IN VAIBHAV SOORYAVANSHI
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s incredible performances forced the Indian selectors to quickly include the age-group cricketer in the national team. Vaibhav has already scored over a thousand runs in just 23 matches in the Indian Premier League. His ability to hit the ball hard and his temperament to tackle tough situations has made him one of the favorites for the opening T20I slot.
Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar elaborated on the selection of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the T20I squad and said that the 15-year-old has largely picked himself with sensational performances in the Under-19 tour and the IPL.
“I think he just picked himself, really,” Agarkar told the media in Mumbai on Saturday, June 6.
“What do you say? We have seen what he can do. You saw that even in those playoffs he almost single-handedly carried Rajasthan Royals,” he added.
“For a young kid, I don’t need to talk about how well he’s batting or how well he’s fielding. And it’s not just this season. He obviously had a great start last season and to back that up, for a young guy in a competition as competitive and as high-pressure an environment as this is special,” Agarkar said.
“How explosive he can be and how he can change the game… like everyone else who followed cricket or at least T20 cricket in India, we had high hopes for him,” he added.
