Bangalore University has decided to close postgraduate (PG) courses with an enrollment of less than 10 students.
After a decision taken at a recent Syndicate meeting, the university concluded three PG courses for the academic year 2025-26: molecular biology, solid waste management and disaster management.
Jayakara SM, Vice -Chairman of the University, said: “Most departments have a faculty of guests and there is no doubt about moving these faculties to other departments.”
Regarding conventional PG courses in artistic subjects such as Sanskrit, Urda, among other things, the vice -chairman said that the adoption of these courses has seen improvements in the last two years. “According to the decision taken in the syndicate, we will decide to continue the course after exploring applications. If applications are less than 10, we will call,” he explained.
“The university already suffers financially. If it is, what is the need to raise courses that have lost demand? If we keep the department, we have to take care of, even if we get a single entry and pay a salary and provide infrastructure,” said the university’s higher official.
Meanwhile, the faculty members proposed that the university should freeze instead of closing the course. There are more than 52 postgraduate departments at the university, some of which lack demand, with a single -digit acceptance, and some accept three times more than available places.
It should be remembered that the university has established a syndicate subcommittee to decide to close courses that were not requested in 2017–18.
According to available details, some of the PG programs that have gradually lost demand,: Sanskrit, Telugu, audiology, speech and language, Hindi, corporate communication, constitution and administration, employment, international business, dance, music, geographical information and life science.
