Allegations of alleged sexual harassment of a minor girl against Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar’s son, Bandi Bhagirath, have taken a serious turn and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has asked officials to immediately launch an inquiry into the incident.
The Chief Minister, who is also the Home Minister, asked Director General of Police (DGP) CV Anand to initiate an investigation into the case registered against Mr. Bhagirath at the Pet Basheerabad police station. Inquiring about the details of the case from the DGP, the Chief Minister questioned why no action has been taken so far when the complaint was filed on May 8.
The DGP told the Chief Minister that the police machinery was busy with security arrangements for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the city on Sunday. The chief minister wanted the DGP to form a special team to investigate the incident comprehensively so that appropriate action could be initiated.
“Bhagirath on the Run”
Meanwhile, Cyberabad police said that Bandi Bhagirath is absconding and his mobile phone has been switched off for the past three days. DCP Kukatpally Ritiraj said the police are analyzing the detailed records of his calls and trying to trace his whereabouts. He said the victim’s statement had already been recorded and would be recorded again to gather more details as part of the ongoing investigation.
Asserting that no one is above the law, the Chief Minister said that the police will follow the legal procedures strictly. Responding to BRS leader RS Praveen Kumar’s criticism, the Chief Minister said that an investigation cannot be conducted on the basis of media statements and as a former police officer, he would know better. He asked Mr. Praveen to present evidence to the police, if he has any, instead of making political allegations.
The development assumes significance as women’s organizations and political parties allege that the police have taken a soft approach towards Mr Bhagirath – who is the son of a Union minister.
