Ayush Badoni’s double century, Priyanshu Moliya’s 321 lit up the Ranji Trophy

Ayush Badoni’s remarkable consistency and Priyanshu Moliya’s counter-attacking triple century were the headlines of an eventful second day of the Ranji Trophy on Tuesday. While Delhi strengthened their position against Jharkhand in their Group C clash, Baroda staged a remarkable recovery against defending champions Jammu and Kashmir.

Badoni continued his impressive run in first-class cricket, following his double century against Gujarat earlier this month with another monumental innings. The Delhi skipper’s unbeaten 210 helped his side post an impressive 515 before Jharkhand reached 131 for four at stumps.

Meanwhile, Moliya led Baroda’s fightback after the hosts slipped to 169 for five. His mammoth partnership with Mahesh Pithiya, who registered his maiden first-class century, helped Baroda turn the contest around and put Jammu and Kashmir under considerable pressure.

BADONI’S BICENTENNIAL PRESENTS DELHI COMMAND

Badoni’s unbeaten 210 off 228 balls was the defining performance of the day at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi. The skipper resumed the second day with Delhi on 274 for five and joined forces with Sumit Mathur to turn a competitive position into a commanding one.

The pair stitched an unbeaten partnership of 334 runs for the sixth wicket, thwarting Jharkhand’s bowling attack and taking Delhi past the 500-run mark. Mathur provided valuable support and remained unbeaten on 150 off 253 balls as Delhi declared their innings at 515.

Badoni’s achievement put him in an elite group alongside former Delhi batsmen Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir, who also scored double centuries in consecutive first-class innings. After hitting 217 against Gujarat in Delhi’s previous match, the 26-year-old became the 21st Indian batsman to register back-to-back double hundreds in first-class cricket.

In reply, Jharkhand reached 131 for four at stumps, with Utkarsh Singh unbeaten on 53. However, the hosts still trailed by 384 runs and face a significant challenge on day three as Delhi look to consolidate their advantage.

MOLIYO’S TERCENTENARY HELPS BARODU

Baroda staged a remarkable turnaround against defending champions Jammu and Kashmir, with Priyanshu Moliya leading the charge after the hosts found themselves in trouble at 169 for five. The 21-year-old, who was part of India’s Under-19 squad in 2024, showed tremendous composure to steer his team to a formidable first innings total.

Moliya combined with Mahesh Pithiya in a mammoth partnership of 266 runs for the seventh wicket. While Moliya anchored the innings with his marathon knock, Pithiya made the most of the opportunity to register his maiden first-class century. After Jammu and Kashmir made early inroads, their stance decisively shifted the momentum in Baroda’s favour.

The revival proved particularly significant against the defending champions. Baroda completed their first innings on 616, with Moliya becoming only the second batsman from the state to reach a triple century in first-class cricket.

Jammu and Kashmir began their reply late in the day, reaching six for no loss in four overs, losing 610 runs to the stumps. Although the visitors went through the opening overs without losing a wicket, Baroda’s impressive total gave them a tough task going into the third day.

A brief score

Baroda: 616 all out in 169 overs. Priyanshu Moliya (321*), Mahesh Pithiya (102), Deepak Hooda (45); Sahil Lotra (4/160), Umar Nazir Mir (2/74)

Jammu and Kashmir: 6/0 in 4 overs. Shubham Khajuria (2*), Qamran Iqbal (0*)

Match situation: Jammu & Kashmir trail Baroda by 610 runs on stumps on day 2.
