At least eight dead and 15 injured in a landslide in Nagaland

GUWAHATI

Landslides at at least 11 places, triggered by heavy continuous rainfall, killed eight people and injured 15 others in Nagaland’s Mon town on Sunday (July 19, 2026) morning.

The town, which is the seat of the Mon district bordering Myanmar, is about 300 km northeast of the state capital Kohima.

Officials of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) said many areas of the rain-hit Mon district have been cut off and communication networks have been disrupted. Many areas of the adjoining Longleng and Mokokchung districts were also affected, but no human casualties were reported.

Four bodies were found

Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak said Monday that the landslides occurred around 6 a.m., killing eight people at one location.

“So far, we have recovered four bodies – three women and a man – from the disaster site. Twelve houses have been damaged at the site,” he said, adding that houses were also damaged in 10 other places in the city, prompting the district administration to relocate residents to safer places.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio mourned the deaths and said the state government was closely monitoring the situation. The government announced ex-gratia assistance of ₹ 4 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and ₹ 74,000 to each of the injured.

He added that the NSDMA, District Disaster Management Authority, State Disaster Response Force, District Administration, Police, Assam Rifles and local residents were involved in the search and rescue operations.

‘Ensure Communication Access’

Bharatiya Janata Party Rajya Sabha member S. Phangnon Konyak, who hails from Mon, said incessant rains and cloudburst had caused widespread destruction at various places. It asked network service providers and responsible authorities to ensure constant access to mobile and internet connectivity in Mon so that rescue operations, emergency calls, warnings and information flow are not restricted.

Apart from Mon district, Tuli sub-division of Mokokchung district and other affected areas were badly affected, witnessing landslides, flash floods, road blockages and damage to public infrastructure and private property.

Help with relief

The government said aid, including food, temporary shelter, basic commodities and other support, would be provided to all affected families in rain- and landslide-affected areas.

The government has also directed all affected departments to remain on high alert and ensure seamless coordination for early response, restoration of connectivity and rehabilitation of affected communities.

Heavy rainfall also triggered a landslide in Guwahati’s Kharghuli area around 10 am on Sunday. Officials said the retaining wall of the family’s hostel collapsed and damaged at least six parked two-wheelers from the hill. No one was injured in the incident.
