(PTI Photo) NEW DELHI: India finally opened its account for the 2026 Asian Games gold medal on Tuesday as the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team successfully defended its women’s cricket title, defeating Sri Lanka in the final at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin.The emphatic victory took India’s medal tally to seven – one gold, four silver and two bronze – and moved the country to eighth in the medal standings at the end of Tuesday’s event.India’s first gold in Aichi-Nagoya came after the defending champions produced a dominant all-round performance. India won the title when the sport returned to the Hangzhou Games in 2023, while the country did not participate when cricket appeared at the 2010 and 2014 editions.Meanwhile, Pakistan also has two gold medals in women’s cricket, having won the inaugural women’s event in 2010 and 2014.

India finally added gold to seven medals

India started their Asian Games campaign with two shooting silver medals before adding three more shooting medals and a historic MMA bronze on Day 2.The women’s cricket gold now provides the Indian contingent with a medal distribution of one gold, four silver and two bronze. The medal tally is expected to rise further, with India securing medals in men’s badminton and wushu.The men’s badminton team booked a semi-final berth with a 3-0 win over Japan, while Roshibina Devi reached the 60kg Sanda semi-finals to guarantee at least a bronze.Indian men’s hockey also boosted their campaign with a stunning 16-1 win over Sri Lanka to add to their 13-1 win over Indonesia in their Group A opener.The men’s cricket competition will begin later in the Games. The Shreyas Iyer-led Indian side is set to enter the competition directly in the second quarter-final on September 28. India is also the defending men’s champion at the Asian Games.

China continues to lead, Japan second

China continues to occupy the top position in the medal standings, with Japan second and South Korea third.China’s dominance was particularly visible in swimming, where 13-year-old Yu Zidi became one of the stars of the Games. Host Japan also celebrated a teenage swimming sensation, 17-year-old Yumeki Kojima winning the men’s 400m individual medley in a Games record 4:07.02.China also added another gold through its shooters, with Olympic champion Sheng Lihao combining with Wang Zifei to win the mixed team 10m air rifle event with a world record 507.1.Afghanistan also celebrated a historic medal after Fariba Hashimi won silver in the women’s road race to become the country’s first Asian Games medalist in cycling.
