Kolkata Knight Riders are in crisis. Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif took aim squarely at what he says is the root cause: turning Andre Russell into a coach. Instead, they should have played him as the all-round match winner that Kaif still is.
KKR have now lost 4 out of 5 matches in IPL 2026. Their only point comes from a lost match against Punjab Kings. They were defeated by Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants.
They lost to Chennai Super Kings in Chepauk last night where they were bowled out for 160 chasing CSK’s 192. The defending champions look unrecognizable from the side that lifted the trophy just two years ago.

Kaif’s argument is straightforward and hard to dispute. When KKR decided not to include Russell in the auction pool, it was thought to be protecting a vital asset. He is a player whose value in the high pressure moments of the IPL is almost unmatched.
“They didn’t drop Andre Russell, they didn’t play him. When he’s sitting stuffed in the dugout, casually swinging the bat and looking like he’s next in line, the bowlers are already feeling the pressure. They know Russell is still coming and he can tear the bowling apart in minutes,” says Kaif.
But by appointing him as assistant coach and keeping him off the field, KKR have effectively neutralized one of the most dangerous match-winners the tournament has ever seen, according to Mohammad Kaif.
The man who can change the game with bat and ball is now sitting in the dugout wearing a polo shirt.
When sitting dressed, the condition of walking birds worsens.
“Even now, Andre Russell is playing across franchise leagues around the world. Age has not reduced his demand. Wherever there is an opportunity, his name is still at the top of the list. Franchises are still chasing him,” Kaif added.
Andre Russell vs Cameron Green
The contrast with Cameron Green makes the decision even harder to justify, Kaif says. The green one was bought for ₹25 crores in the auction.
By any yardstick, form, fitness, recent performances or the impact of the IPL alone, Russell has consistently outperformed him throughout his career. Green is a good cricketer but he is not Dre Russ. Few people are.

“KKR lost a game-winning over against Lucknow. Mukul Chaudhary, who was playing his first match, attacked Green and turned the game around. He bowled 2 overs for 30 runs tonight too. He’s not even giving up with his bat,” Kaid added.
Numerous fans also agree with Kaif. They slammed the KKR management on social media. Many of them demanded Manish Pandey to return to the team. Some are even calling for him to captain KKR and replace Ajinkya Rahane.
Can KKR bring back Andre Russell?
Andre Russell is 36 and clearly in the twilight of his playing career. There are legitimate questions as to whether he could handle the full workload of an IPL season.
KKR may have made this call keeping in mind his body and his long-term future with the franchise. These are not unreasonable considerations.

But the IPL is not always about the long term. In a tournament where every game counts, a player of Russell’s stature can change results at 70% or 80% of his best.

KKR went a bit back to basics last night in 2024. They brought back Sunil Narine as an opener. He scored 24 off 17, with 2 fours and 2 sixes.
Kolkata fans want to see more of 2024 in their team. Will Kolkata bring back Muscle Russell? There is no formal mechanism to get him back on the field this year. A cricketer must be on the List of Registered Available Players (RAPP) to be signed as a replacement player.
KKR will face Gujarat Titans on April 17. They are staring at an early exit from the tournament they won a few years ago.
