In a decision in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for savings in the wake of the ongoing conflict in West Asia, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu ordered officials to ensure a 50% reduction in the number of vehicles in his official convoy during his district tours.
Within hours of stating this in his address to the public at a gathering during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for BISER Skill University in Amaravati on Wednesday, Mr. Naidu made the decision.
The decision was communicated during a meeting with senior police officials, including the Director General of Police and the Chief of Intelligence.
Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan also asked his security personnel to reduce the number of vehicles in his convoy by 50 percent.
The government sees the measures as a step to promote responsible spending and minimizing fuel consumption as part of wider concerns about the efficient use of resources.
Mr. Naidu also instructed ministers and other VVIPs to ensure that the use of vehicles is kept to a minimum during official tours.
He emphasized that the 50 percent reduction in the number of convoys should be introduced at all levels of government and among members of the public whenever possible.
In addition to reducing convoys, the Andhra Pradesh government is also exploring other austerity and resource-saving measures.
According to sources, discussions are underway on several policy initiatives that are expected to be taken up in the state cabinet meeting on Thursday.
