
PUNE: Amol Deokule knows the value of representing the country on the global stage. While the former shooter himself could not play at the highest level, his dream is fulfilled by daughter Ankita. Amol, now a US citizen, is happy that Ankita has made it to the US team for the World Championships in Munich, which starts on May 24. Ankita will represent the USA in the women’s 25m pistol event.Ankita is the second shooter of Indian origin to be a part of Team USA after Suman Sangher, who has represented the nation in many international competitions. Suman is also part of the team for Munich.

I’m looking forward to give my best at a competition where the best of the sport will be seen,” Ankita told TOI from Ohio. Ankita will attend the event where one of her favorite shooters Manu Bhaker will also be shooting. “I have huge respect for Manu, I saw her 25m competition at the Paris Games. I’m excited about shooting in Munich,” she said.Ankita was born in the US while her father Amol moved to the country in the early 2000s. An IT professional, Amol was a shooter and had competed at the national level before giving up the sport. “I was born and brought up in Mumbai and represented Maharashtra in the 10m air rifle events in the late 1990s. But then I had to give up the sport for my career,” he said.Amol says he didn’t think that far when he introduced Ankita to shooting after the outbreak of Covid-19. “After the outbreak of the pandemic, I wanted to start shooting again. My friends who were shooting rifles switched to pistols. I even thought of resuming the sport but this time with a pistol. I took my daughters Ankita and Anjali to the shooting range. Ankita showed interest and started shooting in 2021 and later took up the 25m sports pistol, She23 at an early age. state meets in the same year and her game improved when she joined the Ohio State University’s pistol team and began training under 1996 Atlanta Games silver medalist Emil Milev.”
