An Indian Gaur was rescued from a trap in Papikonda National Park in Andhra Pradesh

Foresters have rescued a 750-kilogram female Indian gaur (Bos gaurus) trapped in a wire trap set by hunters in the eco-sensitive zone of Papikonda National Park (PNP) in Polavaram district of Andhra Pradesh.

Forest officials found the trapped gaur on September 10 while patrolling the Indukuru reserve forest in Rampachodavaram forest division and launched a rescue operation.

A team of forest officials and veterinarians led by Divisional Forest Officer Rampachodavaram Shivakumar Gangal rescued the Indian Gaur.

“The rescued Indian Gaur was sent to Visakhapatnam Animal Rescue Center after initial treatment for advanced veterinary care, rehabilitation and speedy recovery from injuries,” said Mr. Gangal.

The animal responded to treatment and showed signs of recovery at the Visakhapatnam ARC, an official said on Saturday. The Papikonda range in the Godavari valley was formerly known as the “Bison Hills” where the Gaurs of India thrive.
