Amoebic meningoencephalitis claimed one more life in the state, that of a young woman in the Capital District. A 26-year-old woman, a native of Irinchayam in Nedumangad, who was under long-term treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, died on Wednesday evening. She developed fever and headache in the first week of October and was initially treated at the Nedumangadu taluk hospital. She was later taken to the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) after she developed seizures. Her cerebrospinal fluid sample tested positive for amoeba under wet microscopy, and a PCR test later confirmed it was Acanthamoeba.
Water Supply Panchayat
Health officials said the deceased’s household was dependent on panchayat water supply from Arivukkar. No clear history of exposure to any bodies of water was found, although it was recalled that she had recently washed her face in a nearby stream.
So far this year, 170 cases of amoebic meningoencephalitis and 41 deaths have been reported across the state. Thiruvananthapuram has reported 56 cases and 10 deaths Currently, 12 people are being treated for amoebic meningoencephalitis in the district.
