Rumors of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s death are doing the rounds on social media, suggesting that the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was killed in Adiala jail. One of the jailed cricketer-turned-politician’s three sisters, Noreen Niazi, has expressed anguish over uncertainty over her brother’s health.
Stressing that the authorities did not allow her and others to meet him for more than four weeks, she said, “We know nothing. They are not telling us anything, nor are they allowing anyone to meet him. People from his party went there because they had a scheduled meeting, but they were not allowed in,” ANI reported.
She indicated that the authorities were barring access to him, adding: “We have not been allowed to meet him for the last four weeks. We have learned that there are reports in India that he has been killed.”
She accused the Pakistani government of deliberately withholding information and claimed that the police had been given a free hand to deal with those who sided with Imran Khan.
Criticizing incidents of police brutality and repression, she said: “Censorship in Pakistan is so extreme that they detain people from the media… and then repress them so much that when they are released, they are not even allowed to speak.”
Criticizing the Pakistani establishment, she noted: “The major popular names in the Pakistani media are currently out of the country. They have fled and cannot return. Their accounts in Pakistan are blocked, their assets have been seized and their passports have been blocked… We have heard and read about Hitler… just as Hitler locked people in cellars, the same is happening in Pakistan.”
Adiala Jail Administration Reacts to Death Rumors Around Imprisoned Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan
The Adiala Jail administration said on November 26 that the former prime minister remains incarcerated in Rawalpindi Jail, saying rumors of his death were “baseless”. Dismissing speculation about Imran Khan’s death, Adiala Jail officials said: “He is fully healthy and receiving full medical care.”
Officials from Rawalpindi prison said in a statement that reports of his transfer from Adiala prison were not true, Pakistan’s Geo news portal reported.
On Thursday, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, along with other lawmakers and PTI supporters, visited Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, where Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi are lodged in connection with a network of corruption charges. They demonstrated outside the jail amid growing concerns about Imran Khan’s health. This follows claims by the prime minister’s former sister, Aleema Khan, who was denied permission to meet him.
