Ajit Agarkar informs BCCI about the decision to vacate the post of chief selector

In a major development, the BCCI is set to begin the search for a new chief selector after Ajit Agarkar informed the board’s top brass of his decision not to continue in the high-profile role. According to sources close to Agarkar, he has already informed the BCCI that he does not intend to continue in the post.

Earlier on Friday, the BCCI member units mandated office-bearers to take up the challenge of chairman of selectors on Agarkar’s future in the role during the annual general meeting here.

The incumbent chairman of selectors, Agarkar, has remained in the limelight as his contract expires on October 4.

“Officials were empowered to make decisions on selection committee matters,” a senior BCCI official gave an open reply at the end of the meeting.

The BCCI’s 95th Annual General Meeting was attended by its Associate Member States Council, which also featured speeches from former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly (Bengal Cricket Association) and former paceman Venkatesh Prasad (Karnataka State Cricket Association).

Along with the future of the chairman of the senior selection committee, the BCCI is aiming to fill all the five positions of the junior selection committee.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board has received many applications for the junior selection committee and aims to complete the process within a fortnight.

“We have received a very large number of applicants and once the shortlist is finalised, we will forward it to our cricket committee,” he said.

“They will be the competent authority for the selection of the junior selection committee, so that process is going on and we are trying to complete it in the next 10-15 days as all the five (current) selections are going to end their tenure very soon,” he added.

Saikia said the appointment of current Indian fielding coach Subhadeep Ghosh is short-term but his performance will be assessed.

“As far as the fielding coach of the Indian team is concerned, we have appointed him for a short period who is also part of our COE as the Bangalore fielding coach,” Saikia told reporters after the AGM.

“We will assess his performance and based on the opinion of the concerned persons in the team management, we will take a decision to continue his engagement as the field coach of the Indian team. That final decision is yet to be taken,” he added.
