Air India Bird Strike: The airline operator owned by Tata Group, Air India’s Flight Number AI274 from Colombo to Chennai suffered a bird strike on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
According to the PTI news agency report, this incident forced the airline operator to cancel its return flight. The aircraft passengers from Sri Lanka Colombo to India Chennai carried 158 passengers on board when the bird hit.
What happened to the plane?
The flight reportedly carried out a safe landing at Chennai (Maa) on Tuesday and all passengers were safely out of the plane.
In an official statement, the company also revealed that the bird was detected after the plane was landing at the airport in Chennai. Previously, flight crew, which operated the previous route (Chennai to Colombo) on the same aircraft, suspected that such an incident occurred, but engineers found no damage.
“On October 7, the AI273 flight crew announced from Chennai to Colombo a suspicious strike. After landing in Colombo, engineers who saw the plane, did not find damage and the aircraft was cleaned for operation.
After the passengers were de-inch from the plane, the aircraft was grounded and the Air India engineers performed extensive checks. Air India officials also reportedly canceled their return trip to Bandaranaike in Colombo for an incident.
For passengers who were ready to board the same aircraft to return to Colombo, Air India organized an alternative aircraft for 137 passengers who later left for Sri Lanka.
What did Air India do?
Air India assured its passengers that after routine checks after a flight in Chennai, engineers found an impact on the engine blade. As a result, the aircraft was grounded for further assessment of damage.
Airlines operator assured that passengers and crew safety remains the highest priority for the company.
“After routine inspections after a flight in Chennai, engineers observed the impact on the engine blade. As a result, the aircraft was grounded for other inspections and found the cause of damage. Air India remains the safety of passengers and crews with the highest priority,” the company spokeswoman said.
