The Bengaluru city police claimed to have curbed the problem of bursting firecrackers at night during the Deepavali festival, with about 41% of complaints reported after 10 pm handled using proactive detection methods based on artificial intelligence.
Kuldeep Kumar Jain, Joint Commissioner of Police (Administration), said enforcement cameras installed at strategic locations across the city are designed to pick up firecrackers and smoke in public places and immediately alert the command center, which then dispatches the appropriate Hoysala units. This system has drastically reduced air pollution and noise, he said.
This technology was used for the first time in Bengaluru to effectively contain cracking boxes, especially at night.
“The AI Firecracker detection and response initiative has successfully validated the Bengaluru Safe City Project’s ability to integrate advanced AI tools for real-time citizen enforcement. Through collaboration between Bengaluru City Police and IT companies, the project has demonstrated measurable improvements in situational awareness, enforcement accuracy and public safety. This initiative sets a strong precedent for the implementation of India’s major AI-based systems in urban centers,” said Mr. Jain.
The initiative leveraged the city’s extensive Safe City surveillance network, which includes more than 7,500 cameras and Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC) infrastructure. Awiros Appstack’s Firecracker Detection Video AI, powered by Awiros Video Intelligence OS, analyzed live feeds from over 200 existing cameras located in high-density residential and commercial areas such as Srirampuram, KR Market, HSR Layout, Haralur and Marathahalli.
Artificial intelligence algorithms were programmed to detect the flashes of firecrackers, smoke and crowd hyperactivity in real time. Upon detection, the system automatically generated alert packets containing location details, time stamps and visual evidence. These alerts were immediately forwarded to the ICCC and field units via WhatsApp, allowing control room operators to verify incidents and coordinate the immediate police response.
