Additional posts sanctioned in 53 governments helped schools in Kerala as the number of students increased by one

In Kerala, the teacher-student ratio is 1:30 for classes I to V and 1:35 for classes VI to VIII. An additional division is created if the number of pupils exceeds 30 by an even one at the lower primary school level and 35 by an even one at the upper primary level.

Additional seats were sanctioned in 53 government and aided schools in Kerala during the staff fixation for the academic years 2023-24 to 2025-26, though only one additional student was admitted to the class.

Contributions were sanctioned from primary to high school classes.

Teacher-student ratio

In the state, the teacher-student ratio is 1:30 for classes I to V and 1:35 for classes VI to VIII. An additional division is created if the number of pupils exceeds 30 by an even one at the lower primary school level and 35 by an even one at the upper primary level.

However, in classes IX and X where the teacher-student ratio is 1:45, the next division is formed only if the 51st student is admitted and the third only if the 96th student is admitted.

The Directorate of General Education had proposed a few years ago to amend the Kerala Education Rules so that the post of second teacher would be created only if there was an increase of six students in lower primary schools. In classes VI to VIII, it was recommended to create one section for up to 40 students and two for students between 41 and 75, three if it is between 76 and 110.

District Contributions

Among the posts created, six upper primary teacher posts have been approved in Thiruvananthapuram – five in aided schools and one in a government school. Three of them were sanctioned in the academic year 2023-24, one in 2024-25 and two in 2025-26.

In Kollam, of the three sanctioned seats, two were in government schools and one in aided schools. All were sanctioned in the academic year 2025-26. Two were lower primary school teachers and one was a secondary school PE teacher.

In Pathanamthitta Govt Sector Upper Primary Teacher Post has been sanctioned.

In Alappuzha, five seats were sanctioned in government sector and four in aided schools, while in Idukki, two in aided schools and one in government sector were sanctioned. Three of them were lower primary school teachers and two upper primary school teachers.

Three seats were sanctioned in aided schools and one in a government school in Thrissur, while three were sanctioned in government schools and one in an aided school in Malappuram. One post sanctioned in Wayanad in 2025–26 was at a government school in Mananthavady.

In Kozhikode, all five government school posts have been approved, two each for upper primary and secondary teachers and one for lower primary teachers. In Kannur, four seats have been approved in the 2025-26 academic year, all in aided schools.

Kasaragod district had the maximum number of such seats — 13. All but one were in government schools. Two were lower primary school teachers and six upper primary school teachers and five secondary school teachers.

No additional posts have been sanctioned in Kottayam, Ernakulam and Palakkad.
