A 24-year-old woman from Nalathadukka died in hospital days after facing charges of gold theft. Her family claimed that prolonged public humiliation and mental harassment drove her to the extreme step.
Jaseela, a mother of two, was found in a critical condition at her residence last Sunday (February 22, 2026) and was admitted to a private hospital in Kasaragod where she died during treatment. Her relatives have filed a complaint that false allegations of gold theft have caused severe psychological trauma.
According to the family, she was accused of theft by a young neighbor and his family who lived near her husband’s house. Jaseela was earlier questioned by the Adoor police in connection with the complaint. But no evidence was found to support the allegation and she was released, the relative said.
The family also leveled serious allegations against the Vidyanagar police station, alleging that no policewomen were present when she was summoned for questioning and that she faced severe psychological harassment during the process. They demanded a comprehensive investigation into alleged misconduct by the police.
Police said a case of unnatural death has been registered and investigation is on. The judge reportedly recorded Jaseela’s confidential statement while she was undergoing treatment at the hospital. Officials said all circumstances surrounding the allegations, including claims of mental harassment, would be thoroughly investigated.
Relatives further said that prior to the incident, Jaseela had recorded a video message claiming her innocence and that she had been humiliated. The visuals have since surfaced and intensified public debate in the area.
