The Jubilee Hills election campaign is gaining momentum as election day – November 11 – approaches. With the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) deploying its legislators and corporators to campaign for Congress candidate V. Naveen Yadav, and the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) targeting both parties, the contest has intensified. The parties are eyeing the Muslim vote, which is estimated at around 1.4 million voters from a constituency of just over 4 million voters.
BRS workers started playing audio clips of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi’s past speeches, including those praising former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and the BRS. The clips are used during a door-to-door campaign in several neighborhoods.
In earlier public remarks, Mr Owaisi had criticized former Jubilee Hills MLA, the late Maganti Gopinath, for doing little to develop the constituency while implicitly supporting Yadav, calling him a “local candidate”. This silent support has now turned into open support.
BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Wednesday questioned Mr Owaisi’s decision to support Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, recalling that the AIMIM leader had earlier referred to Mr Reddy as an “RSS anna” during the 2023 Assembly campaign. Mr. Rama Rao defended the tenure of BRS in Jubilee Hills and claimed that projects worth ₹5,328 crore were executed during Gopinath’s tenure as MLA.
Meanwhile, Mr Revanth Reddy was criticized for remarks at a public meeting on Tuesday where he said: “If there is Congress, there are Muslims. If there is Congress, you have dignity. If there is no Congress, you are not there.”
The comments drew criticism from several quarters, including BRS. Addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan here, Advisor to the Telangana Government Mohammad Ali Shabbir, accompanied by Minority Welfare Minister Mohammed Azharuddin, clarified that the Chief Minister’s comments were meant to highlight the Congress party’s historical association with the Muslim community and its affinity with the Muslim community. Referring to the freedom movement, he said that members of Jamiat-ul-Ulama had collaborated with Congress leaders during the independence struggle.
In a separate article on Wednesday, AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi, speaking at the party headquarters in Darussalam, said that no matter who is in power, AIMIM is equipped to get the job done. He claimed that while some sections perceive the AIMIM as coming closer to the powerful parties, the opposite was the case.
