
A pregnant woman was burnt to death after the car she was traveling in caught fire at Cheruvannur in Kozhikode on Friday evening.
The deceased was identified as Sona (27), wife of Lal Poovathumchal, hailing from Kakkaramukku near Perambra. Police sources said that Lal, who was allegedly driving the vehicle, sustained severe burns. He was rushed to Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode.
According to police sources, the accident happened around 9 p.m. The husband and wife were returning home after consulting the gynecologist. Although local residents tried to save the passengers, the fire engulfed the vehicle within minutes. As the door remained locked, Sona could not get out. Her body was later recovered from the back seat of the vehicle.
Police said they have not yet determined the cause of the fire. They added that the incident is being thoroughly investigated.
