Portraying a character in a blockbuster malayalam language the film Vaazha 2: Biopic of a Billion Bros has reignited the debate on the alleged harmful effects of Ayurvedic medicines.
A character in the film, played by actor Bijukkuttan, dies of cirrhosis of the liver after consuming an overdose of ‘aristam’, a fermented herbal concoction, over a long period of time. A section of Ayurvedic practitioners said this was part of “propaganda” against the traditional Indian system of medicine. Although some functionaries of the Ayurvedic Medical Association of India (AMAI) recently said they would take legal action if the “misleading scenes” were not removed, AMAI state president Vishnu Namboothiri said on Monday that an official decision in this regard was yet to be taken.
