The much-awaited ₹422 crore redevelopment of Mysuru railway station, including a proposed third entry terminal, moved a step closer to reality on Monday as Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar urged the Railway Ministry to grant immediate administrative and financial approval to the project.
During a meeting with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi, Mr. Wadiyar pressed for speedy approval of the station modernization plan and also sought the extension of the proposed Chennai to Mysuru high-speed rail corridor.
In a memorandum submitted to the minister, the MP said that Mysuru’s growing status as a cultural, educational, tourism and economic hub is leading to a steady increase in passenger traffic, which requires heavy investment in rail infrastructure.
Mr. Wadiyar noted that the architectural design and planning processes for the station redevelopment project have already been completed after consultations with railway officials and architects as directed by the minister earlier. He urged the Ministry of Railways to expedite the approval and start the work as soon as possible.
The proposed redevelopment, which includes a third arrival terminal, is expected to improve passenger amenities, relieve existing access points and enhance multimodal connectivity around the station. The project is also aimed at improving the accessibility of the railway station.
Priority for Mysuru
Seeking a greater role for Mysuru in future rail infrastructure planning, Mr. Wadiyar urged the ministry to include the city in feasibility studies and long-term plans for high-speed rail projects.
He said the extension of the proposed Chennai-Bengaluru high-speed rail corridor to Mysore would enhance economic integration between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu while boosting tourism, trade, investment and employment opportunities.
“A modern, high-speed and environmentally sustainable transport network would complement Mysuru’s expanding industrial and educational ecosystem and support the city’s long-term growth aspirations,” he said.
The MP expressed confidence in the twin proposals, saying the station redevelopment project and the future high-speed rail link would serve as catalysts for regional economic growth.
