Trump sends draft Iran deal back with changes, insists on tougher talk over Hormuz, nuclear program: Report | Today’s news

US President Donald Trump reportedly rolled back changes to the proposed Iran deal after meeting with his advisers on Friday to make a “final decision”.

Citing officials, CNN said the proposed changes have now extended the back-and-forth to another week. While the exact changes to the text were not immediately clear, officials said Trump insisted on tougher language on Tehran’s nuclear commitments and its commitment to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway that has been closed since the U.S. and Israel attacked the Islamic Republic in late February.

Trump also expressed concern about the financial aid Tehran could receive as part of the deal, wanting to avoid comparisons to the “pallets of cash” delivered under the Obama-era nuclear deal, which he sees as weak.

Will the US-Iran war end soon?

The latest set of proposed changes comes a week after the US president said the Iran deal had been “largely negotiated” and suggested an end to the war was near.

Since then, U.S. officials have signaled progress toward a deal that would end hostilities, reopen the strait and pave the way for more detailed talks on Iran’s nuclear program.

Despite the US president announcing during Friday’s meeting that he would make a “final decision” and citing some trade on social media, the two-hour meeting ended without any major decision.

This is a developing story. Further details were awaited.
