The Andr Pradesh government is ready to carry out a technical investigation to assess the structural stability of the 125 -year -old Havelock bridge across the Godavari River, connecting the city of Rajamahendramat with the city of Kovvur in the Godavari region.
Recently, the Ministry of Tourism of the Union sanctioned Crore 94.44 GBP for the Akhand Godavari project proposed by the State Government for various facilities in the field of tourism infrastructure, especially to transform an abandoned bridge into a tourist place in front of Pushkarams-2027 Godavari.
On Monday (23rd June 2025), state Minister Andhra Pradesh for tourism and culture Kandula Durgesh announced; “A few years ago, studies of experts from the Indian Institute of Technology (Iit-Madras) claimed that the structural stability of the Havelock bridge was good. However, we decided to enter another expert committee for the new assessment of the structural stability of the Havelock bridge.”
Mr. Durgesh also added that the plan to beautify the Havelock bridge includes the permission of the craft bazaar and other tourist attractions on the bridge and beautifying its 25 spans on various topics about culture, crafts and folk literature Andr Pradesh. Under the bridge was designed a tent city to be built on the 120 acre island of the Godavari River.

The construction of the 2.74 km long Havelock bridge began on November 11, 1897 and was entrusted with Indian railways on August 30, 1900. However, the southern central railways left the bridge in 1997. The bridge was named after Sir Arthur Elibank Havelock, Governor of Madras.
The Railway Board approved the Havelock bridge to the state government Andhra Pradesh to “as it is, where it is”.
