A fit Rohit matches Kohli’s style on the field as India run amok in Auckland

Make no mistake, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are pushing hard for a place at the ODI World Cup 2027. The intensity of their efforts was on display in Auckland on Wednesday, where the two senior Indian batsmen combined to take two wickets against New Zealand in the opening ODI of the five-match series.

India dominated proceedings and reduced New Zealand to 146/9 in 35 overs. The four fast bowlers in the Indian attack were impressive as the hosts struggled to negotiate the pace, bounce and hint of seam movement on offer.

NZ vs IND, 1st ODI: UPDATE

Arshdeep Singh took four wickets while Anshul Kamboj claimed two wickets as India kept New Zealand under pressure. But amid an impressive display by the bowlers, it was the efforts of the two senior statesmen that caught the eye.

Rohit Sharma set the tone in the 22nd over. Shubman Gill brought spin to the attack for the first time in the match when Glenn Phillips tapped the ball towards leg and went for a single, hoping to use his partner Daryl Mitchell’s skills against the slower bowling.

The batsmen hesitated briefly, unsure whether to make a run. Rohit needed no further invitation. Charging from short midwicket, he collected the ball and fired a rocket to KL Rahul who was standing by the stumps.

Rahul took off the bails in a flash and caught Mitchell just short of his crease.

The dismissal sparked celebrations among Indian supporters in the stands and offered another reminder of Rohit’s fielding acumen.

As the 39-year-old raised the bar, Kohli was hardly left behind.

In the 29th over, Kohli darted to the right side to take advantage of Nathan Smith. The ball flew at considerable speed, leaving little time for the fielder to react, but Kohli’s sharp reflexes and anticipation helped him complete the catch.

India eventually bowled out New Zealand for 185 in 40.2 overs, with their seamers leading the charge and the fielders ensuring the pressure never let up. For Rohit and Kohli, the two dismissals were further displays of the athleticism and determination they continue to bring to the side as India progress towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.
