2026 US Midterm Election Results LIVE: Will US President Donald Trump’s Republican Party Retain Power in the US House and Senate? Americans went to the polls on Tuesday (November 3) to decide who controls Congress.
Polls began closing in Indiana and Kentucky at 6 p.m. ET (2300 GMT), followed by Georgia, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia and most of Florida at 7 p.m.
The results, held two years after the presidential election, will determine how much legislative power US President Donald Trump’s administration retains for the rest of his term (which ends in 2028).
Is the voting over? When will the results start coming?
The first US mid-term results are expected around 4:30 AM IST on Wednesday, November 4, which corresponds to 6:00 PM Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Tuesday.
Polls in seven states closed on Tuesday as millions of Americans cast ballots to decide whether to wrest control of Congress from President Donald Trump’s Republicans, according to Reuters.
State related details: The first polls will close on Tuesday at 6 pm ET (4:30 am IST) in parts of Indiana and Kentucky, followed by 7 pm in states including Georgia, Virginia and South Carolina.
Polls close at 7:30 PM (6:00 IST) in North Carolina and Ohio, followed by a large group of states at 8:30 PM (6:30 IST), including Pennsylvania and Maine as well as most of Texas and Michigan.
Voting ends at 9:30 pm (7:30 am IST) in battleground states including Arizona and Wisconsin, along with remaining parts of Texas and Michigan.
Polls in Nevada close at 10:30 PM (8:30 IST) Eastern, followed by California and several other western states at 11:30 PM (9:30 IST). The last polls in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands close at 1:00 a.m. ET (11:30 a.m.) on Wednesday.
What did the exit polls show?
According to exit polls, Democrats are favored to capture the House, and the two parties could be locked in an intense state battle for the Senate.
Voters chastised Trump and his agenda, blaming him for stubbornly high prices, with a large majority unhappy with the direction the country is headed, according to polls conducted by SSRS on behalf of a US media consortium that included major television networks and the Associated Press.
Exit polls reflected a largely sour mood among voters, with half of voters saying they see the 2026 election as an opportunity to rebuke the president, and three-quarters saying they are “angry” or “dissatisfied” with the way the country is going.
Many reportedly said they felt worse off than when Trump entered the White House in 2025. Nearly 9 in 10 said the cost of living was a major or major factor in their vote, signaling the election could prove a rejection of Trump and his GOP.
Why are there midterm elections in the US?
Midterm elections are usually seen as a referendum on the president, and this is especially true for Trump, who dominates the spotlight like no other modern politician. Trump himself has told his supporters to “pretend I’m on the ballot,” a message that Democratic leaders have been happy to repeat.
