The Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) has suspended the licenses of 138 medical shops across the state for violating regulations governing the sale of addictive drugs.

The action follows a special enforcement operation conducted on October 15 by TG SAFE drug wing in coordination with enforcement wing police personnel at medical shops in vulnerable areas across the state to curb illegal sale and abuse of addictive drugs.

Suspension orders were issued against 138 facilities. Of these, 98 medical stores were suspended until further orders and 40 were suspended for a certain period. Warnings were also issued by two other facilities, bringing the total number of enforcement actions to 140.

The devices were found to be in violation of the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940 and rules governing the sale of addictive drugs.

TG SAFE has warned chemists and druggists against selling addictive drugs, including psychoactive drugs and Schedule H and H1 drugs, without valid prescriptions issued by registered medical practitioners. Such drugs must also not be dispensed in the absence of a registered pharmacist, it said.
