The meeting was held to increase the volume of air cargo from Coimbatore
Coimbatore trade and industry, freight forwarders and transporters met the director of the Airports Authority of India in Coimbatore on Tuesday to discuss ways to improve cargo movement from the Coimbatore International Airport.
R. Rajeshkumar, President, Custom Broker & Shipping Agents’ Association, said that the Cargo Facilitation Committee meeting was held after six years. Air cargo movement from Coimbatore has huge potential for improvement. Fly Dubai is set to offer two to three charter flights a week and is said to have sought details on export and import trade and potential.
“Air exports have huge potential and the data is available. Most of them now go through Kochi, Chennai or Bengaluru. Similarly, imports are through other ports. We are trying to collect these details,” he said.
With the huge volume of export cargo generated from Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Erode and Nilgiris districts, the cargo potential of Coimbatore International Airport is huge. The next meeting of the committee will be held in February to take measures to improve the movement of air cargo from there, he added.
